Buford Highway McDonald's opens 1961

Atlanta Journal October 31, 1961, advertising the McDonald’s at 5220 Buford Highway, Doraville, “Home of American’s ‘goodest’ hamburger!”

The McDonald’s restaurant at 5220 Buford Highway was one of the earliest McDonald’s in Georgia. The June 23, 1961 Atlanta Constitution had a short announcement, “McDonald’s hamburger chain has announced the start of construction on its third Atlanta area restaurant unit, a $125,000 facility on the Buford Highway in Doraville, in its 265 restaurant chain covering 34 states.”

Those who grew up nearby may recall as I do, visiting this McDonald’s. It was a special treat when my parents drove us there to have burgers and fries. It began as a walk up only restaurant. This location closed permanently in 2018.

An Atlanta Journal June 25, 1963 advertisement reads “See the Crackers free,” come to McDonald’s for an All American dinner and also get a free ticket to see the Atlanta Crackers baseball team on McDonald’s night at Ponce de Leon Park.” The All American meal included a hamburger, fries, and “triple-thick old-fashioned milk shake” at the McDonald’s Golden Arches.

The 1963 ad also offers, “Officer Don says Don’t forget to register for McDonald’s Birthday Club and get your free prizes.” There is another blast from the past-Officer Don!
